For the past 5 days Susanna, our close friend Joe, and I have been enjoying our dream vacation in Corniglia. During the days, a lot of international tourists visit it as part of the Cinque Terre National Park, but in the mornings and evenings the real Italian village culture comes to life: Spontaneous conversations in the central plaza in front of the tiny church, curiosity about us, and passion to share their opinions about the Euros 2024 Soccer Championships.
Italians have a slogan that they freely demonstrate: Dolce Far Niente - It is sweet to do nothing.
For many years it annoyed me because it offended my German work ethics and my American work drive with little vacation. Why would it be sweet to do nothing? I had considered it lazy, passive, or unmotivated at best.
But then I stopped and had a closer look and started to practice the Genius Way of Doing Nothing: Laying 10 minutes on the floor without digital distractions or fears of forgetting something important on my endless to do list, without any mantra or trying to meditate. Just BEING and listening to my body, penetrating the constant activity layer of DOING. It is simple, but NOT easy.
But with some consistency the magic started to occur- burnout and restlessness symptoms slowed down, questions of deeper meaning and purpose surfaced and feelings for the value of my own body and all people in my life increased, conversations felt deeper and more authentic. I found hundreds of reasons to be thankful for my heartbeat, my healthy digestion, my enjoyment of delicious healthy food, my love for Susanna and Joe, my precious clients, our amazing experiences together over these past 2 weeks in Zermatt and Corniglia.
BEING is the source for creativity, intuition, imagination, trust, connection, confidence and many other essential qualities of life.
BEING feels like the deep ocean of calm waters, independent from any high waves on the surface.
How curious are you to experience that magic behind the Genius of Doing Nothing and explore your own BEING domain, using deep gratitude as your guiding star.
