Winter Hike Insights |
Susanna and I hiked the Grand Canyon just before the Holidays. On the way up from Phantom Ranch to the South Rim we faced the wall - solid black rock that looked discouraging, intimidating and insurmountable, especially after a 5-hour uphill hike in the rain. But then we just did step after step, thankful for the people who designed and created the Bright Angel trail for mules and humans more than a century ago.
After a while we looked down with pride from the top of that wall. However, now we faced a second wall, this time in red sandstone. The strategy changed slightly: "Just breathe deeper, make your strides slower but a little longer and pay even more attention to the flow of your body. Estimated arrival time doesn't matter, excperiencing every moment with changing emotions is priority".
After another hour we could look back again with pride and sense of accomplisment, facing the last wall - this time in light brown limestone, with an extra bonus of snow and ice: More exhaustion, more pride, but a certainty that we will conquer this wall as well with simplicity and consistency - one step at a time with micro spikes on our shoes.
If you face any wall in your life for now or in 2020 - trust your body: it might look scary or intimidating first, but you will always find a way to grow as a person and be proud on a new level.
Enjoy your personal walls and the sweet feeling of victory and accomplishment after mastering them!
